Driving up and down the California Coastline is such a beautiful experience. It feels adventurous and special, intimate and unique. Every time, a different experience. This is one reason why I get so excited when couples decide to exchange vows in such a special place. I’ve been blessed to shoot more than one intimate elopement on the California Coast, and I must admit – they are some of my favorite shoots I’ve ever been a part of.
Although there are so many options for locations to “tie the knot,” it might behoove you to explore lesser known destinations. If it’s an intimate elopement you’re seeking, you might want to find a location where few people visit. So although San Diego, LA, San Francisco, and Big Sur might be appealing, let me help you find another few options that might fit your aesthetic better!
The couple pictured below traveled from Utah, in search of a coastal area nearby a forested area. They sought greenery and the ocean. The ultimate decision landed on a gorgeous little town called Half Moon Bay. Half Moon Bay provided the perfect backdrop for their nuptuals for a few reasons. This coastal California town offers a few boutique restaurants, minimal shopping, a few locations for nearby accommodation, and gorgeous, picturesque landscapes. One of the best parts of this area is that it’s less densely populated than other more well-known destinations. In fact, the town consists of just over 11,00 residents. This is such a lovely location for an intimate gathering.
If Half Moon Bay isn’t exactly your speed, try Monterey Bay or Carmel. Or, continue up the coast for a little while. If you travel north of San Francisco, there are a bunch of other options, including Fort Bragg, Point Reyes, Bodega Bay, Sea Ranch, etc.
Something to be aware of, no matter where you decide to elope, are the local regulations regarding matrimony. Some additional permits are required to wed outdoors. Make sure you do your research!
